Wahpeton Breckenridge
Area Chamber of Commerce
The Wahpeton Breckenridge Area Chamber of Commerce is the local marketing and business promotion agent
dedicated to creating a climate in which business can succeed, by advocating positions
that consistently improve the economic well-being and quality of life. Goals are achieved
through teamwork with other community groups and through the Chamber's program of work.
The Executive Vice President is Jim Oliver.
City of Wahpeton
Wahpeton is governed under North Dakota's "Modern Council" laws. The City is
divided into 4 Wards. One Council Member from each
ward and four Council Members "At Large" are elected for
4-year staggered terms. The City Council meets on the first and third
Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m.
The
Mayor is the 9th member elected to a four year term, presiding at
all meetings, retains veto powers and votes only to break ties.

Breckenridge is governed by a strong mayor-council type of
government. The seven member council meets the first and third
Monday of each month.
Wahpeton Parks &
Recreation Department
The Wahpeton Parks & Recreation Department offers a variety of
activities year round including
baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball, track and field,
wrestling, gymnastics, and hockey.

Breckenridge Public Schools Youth Programs
The Breckenridge Public School system offers numerous
activities year-round. Choose
from crafts for kids, chess club, fishing, beginning guitar,
canoeing the Ottertail River, T-Ball, Softball, track and field,
baseball, tennis, speed and strength, volleyball, basketball camp,
wrestling camp, open gym and more! There is a minimal fee for each class.

Wahpeton Police
The Wahpeton Police Department serves the community 24 hours a day. They are involved in a variety of community
endeavors and welcomes questions, concerns, and suggestions on any issues that affect
livability within the City of Wahpeton.
Chief Scott Thorsteinson and 12 officers serve the community.

Breckenridge Police
The Breckenridge Police Department consists of four full-time dispatchers, a
chief, a sergeant, four patrol officers and one detective. Chief

Wahpeton
Fire Department
Wahpeton Fire Department is a volunteer department with 45 members. The department is
pager controlled. The members respond to 3 different stations in the city and man 8 pieces
of apparatus. The Fire Chief is Don Klovstad.

Breckenridge Fire Department
Volunteer fire department personnel are capable of handling
extractions from vehicles by use of the “jaws of life”
equipment. Emergency response teams are trained as First

Richland County Historical Society
The Richland County Historical Society preserves and perpetuates the history of Richland
County with artifacts the pioneers used in building this area. The museum wishes to ensure
the accessibility and preservation of historical records and encourage public awareness of
the value of common things used today and in the past.
Come see their collection of beautiful Rosemeade Pottery. These collectors pieces were made locally at
Wahpeton Pottery. The museum is open Tuesdays, Thursdays,
Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. They are
closed during the winter.

Wilkin County Historical Society
The Wilkin County Historical Society collects and preserves
materials that will help to define or illustrate the History of
Wilkin County. The Museum tries to instill a pride for
one's community in every citizen, especially in our youth, by
various means of publications, newspapers, documents, pictures,
biographies, histories and artifacts. The museum is open
on Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursday afternoons from 1:30-4:00
pm. The museum is closed during the winter months.

Leach Public Library
The Leach Public Library has been providing library services since April 8, 1924 and
in 1999 we celebrated the 75th year in this building. It has basically remained unchanged
and is in the Register Of Historic Buildings.
The Library is handicapped accessible to all three levels by using the west entrance where
the lift is located. The Library is free to all residents of Richland County and all
Lake Agassiz Regional Library patrons. Anyone not living within our service area may
obtain a library card for $10 for two years. Some form of identification is required
before a library card is issued.
The Leach Public Library has a wide variety of services it provides free of charge to the
public including internet service and lending materials. Genealogy:
They have on microfilm the local newspaper back to the 1860's that
may be viewed on the microfilm reader available in the library.
They also have several of the Richland County Township Histories.
Also available is a new database called "Ancestry" that has
excellent search abilities. The Leach Public Library is located at 417
2nd Avenue North, Wahpeton, ND 58075.

NDSCS
Mildred Johnson Library
Dedicated in 1970, the Mildred Johnson Library is centrally located north of Old Main.
Students, faculty, and persons from the surrounding community have access to a building
designed with an open atmosphere, yet still providing numerous individual study carrels
and group study rooms. Individual stations are available for viewing and listening to
various non-print materials from the librarys collections.
The approximately 70,000 book collection and the periodicals collection of almost 950
titles form a unique core collection of technical, business, and services-oriented
materials. Audiovisual titles, mostly instructional in nature, number approximately 3,000.
All daily North Dakota newspapers and a majority of the weekly ones are available in the
main reading area. The library maintains a collection of United States telephone
directories on line.
Access to the librarys collections is through ODIN (Online Dakota Information
Network), a computerized database listing holdings of all North Dakota college and
university libraries as well as two of the larger public libraries. ODIN also accesses
similar databases in Minnesota and South Dakota.
